Application Guide
Built by enthusiasts. Applied like a pro.
This guide covers how to apply car decals and windscreen sunstrips correctly. Proper application ensures your decals last longer and look professional.
🔧 What You'll Need
- Your Redline Rebel decal
- Microfibre cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or panel wipe
- Squeegee or credit card
- Masking tape
- Spray bottle with soapy water (sunstrips only)
Note: Soapy water is for sunstrips only. Do not use on standard decals.
🧼 Surface Prep
Good prep is the difference between a decal that lasts and one that lifts.
You do not need professional chemicals — just clean properly.
What Works at Home
- Warm water + washing-up liquid
- Microfibre or lint-free cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or standard glass cleaner
- Kitchen roll (no fibres left behind)
How to Prep
- Wash the area with warm soapy water
- Rinse and dry completely
- Wipe the surface with glass cleaner or IPA
- Make sure the surface is dry, cool, and clean
⚠️ Do not apply over wax, polish or ceramic coatings.
📏 Measure & Position
Measure the area where the decal will go. Mark the centre point with masking tape if needed.
Hold the decal in place and check alignment before peeling the backing. Use masking tape to hold it temporarily if required.
🧲 Prepare the Decal
Peel the backing paper slowly at around 45-degree angle. This prevents the vinyl from stretching or distorting.
Avoid touching the adhesive side. Oils from your fingers can reduce adhesion.
🎯 Applying Your Decal
Small & Medium Decals (Dry Apply)
Position the decal carefully and press it down from the centre outwards.
Use a squeegee or credit card to smooth out air bubbles, working from the centre to the edges.
Peel off the transfer tape slowly at a 45-degree angle once the decal is fully applied.
Large Decals (Dry Apply)
Use the hinge method: tape the top edge of the decal in place, then peel the backing from the bottom up.
Apply the decal from top to bottom, smoothing as you go with a squeegee.
Remove the transfer tape slowly once fully applied.
Sunstrips (Wet Apply Only)
Spray the windscreen with soapy water. This allows you to reposition the sunstrip before it sets.
Peel the backing and apply the sunstrip to the wet surface. Adjust position as needed.
Squeegee out water and air bubbles from the centre outwards. Use firm, even pressure.
Remove the transfer tape slowly once all water is removed.
💨 Air Bubbles
Small bubbles (around 2mm or less) usually disappear on their own within 24–48 hours, especially in warmer temperatures.
How to Deal With Bubbles Safely
- Try pushing the air out gently using your finger or a squeegee, working towards the nearest edge
- Do not lift the decal once it has been pressed down — this can stretch the vinyl
Stubborn Bubbles
If a bubble won’t move:
- Use a very fine pin or needle
- Gently prick the bubble at the edge, not the centre
- Press the air out slowly with your finger
Done properly, this will not affect the look or lifespan of the decal.
⏱️ Cure Time
Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully before washing or exposing to harsh conditions.
Avoid car washes, rain, and extreme temperatures during this period.
🧠 Pro Tips
- Apply decals in temperatures between 15°C and 25°C for best results.
- Avoid direct sunlight during application. It can cause the adhesive to set too quickly.
- In cold weather, warm the surface gently with a hairdryer before applying.
- Take your time. Rushing leads to mistakes and poor adhesion.
❌ Common Mistakes
- Applying to dirty or waxed surfaces
- Using soapy water on standard decals (dry apply only)
- Removing transfer tape too quickly
- Applying in cold or wet conditions
- Touching the adhesive side with bare hands
